How to Clear Storm Drain Debris Around Your Home

A storm drain that used to handle a hard Oregon rain can become a small lake overnight when leaves, needles, mud, and litter collect at the grate. Knowing how to clear storm drain debris can protect your driveway, parking area, landscaping, and building foundation - but only when the blockage is near the surface and safe to reach.

The key is to clear what you can see without putting yourself in danger or damaging a private drainage system. If water remains high after surface debris is removed, the problem may be farther down the line. That is when professional cleaning and a camera inspection can save time, mess, and repeat flooding.

Start by Confirming Which Drain You Are Dealing With

Not every street-side drain belongs to the property owner. A curb inlet or grate in the public street is often maintained by the city or county. Do not remove a public drain grate, enter a catch basin, or use tools that could damage public infrastructure. If a public inlet is blocked and water is creating a traffic hazard, report it to the appropriate local public works department.

Private storm drains are common around homes, rental properties, commercial buildings, parking lots, and rural driveways. You can usually clean loose debris from the surface of these drains, provided the area is stable and water is not deep or moving quickly.

How to Clear Storm Drain Debris Safely

Put on waterproof work gloves, sturdy shoes with good traction, and eye protection. A rake, broom, shovel, bucket, or grabber tool is usually enough for a simple surface blockage. Keep children and pets away from the work area.

Start at the outside edge of the grate. Pull away leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, mulch, and trash, then move outward another few feet. A clear grate can still clog again immediately if a thick layer of debris remains around it. Bag the material and dispose of it with yard waste or garbage as appropriate. Do not push it into the drain, gutter, or nearby ditch.

Once the grate is clear, watch how the water responds. A small amount of standing water may take a few minutes to drain. A strong blast of water can pack sediment farther into the pipe.

Know When Surface Cleanup Is Not Enough

Landscape mulch is another frequent issue. During heavy rain, loose bark and wood chips move across driveways and planting beds until they collect at the lowest point. Keep mulch, soil piles, bags of yard waste, and stored materials away from drainage paths. When cleaning gutters, collect the debris rather than washing it toward a downspout drain.
