A recurring sewer backup can make hydro jetting sound like the obvious answer: send high-pressure water through the line and wash the blockage away. But does jetting damage old pipes? It can, if a pipe is already cracked, collapsed, badly corroded, or improperly assessed first. When the line is structurally sound enough for cleaning and the equipment is operated by a trained technician, hydro jetting is often one of the most effective ways to clear years of buildup from an aging drain.
The key difference is diagnosis. A professional should not treat every old sewer line the same way. The condition of the pipe, the material it is made from, the type of clog, and the location of any damage all determine whether jetting is the right next step.
What Hydro Jetting Actually Does
Hydro jetting uses a specialized hose and nozzle to send pressurized water through a drain or sewer line. The forward jets help pull the hose through the pipe, while rear-facing jets scour grease, sludge, scale, roots, soap residue, and debris from the pipe walls.

It may also be a practical short-term option for a line with manageable root intrusion when a property owner needs drainage restored while planning a larger repair.
Repair becomes the better investment when the camera shows a collapse, significant crack, missing pipe section, major offset, severe corrosion, or a belly that holds wastewater.
